Jean-Paul Vroom Biography

 

1922 Born in the Hague, French mother Dutch father.
1936 Intermship at his father's set design studio.
1938 L'académie des Beaux-Arts at The Hague. While being influenced by the Bauhaus style worked under the direction Schrofer, Citroen and Drayer.
1939 Forced to quit L'académie des Beaux-Arts because of rebelious attitude and lack of discipline. First exhibition with 'The Hague' group, mainly influenced by 'New Realism' and also some Surrealism
1940 Air raid destroys his studio. Emphasis on large portraits and group portraits.
1941 Exposition at The Hague and drawings at Kunsthandel Landweer
1942 Refusal to join the 'Kulturkammer' and evading forced labor results in going into hiding.
1943 Having joined the Resistance and being wanted by the Gestapo, decided to flee to Spain. After arrest manages to escape and goes back to Paris in August 1943. Group exposition with Jeanne Bücher
1944 Enrollement School Estienne to train in engraving techniques. Works with Cottet, Mercier and Bonfils. First book illustration publication, Les Cenci by Stendhal.
1946 Illustrations for La Doulou by Alphonse Daudet and the complete works of Baudelaire
1948  
1949 Show at Sothmann, Amsterdam. Paintings & engravings.
1951  
1952 Show in Strassburg. Illustrations for Les Revenants Futurs with poems by George Hugnet.
1953  
1954 Stay in Italy. Set design for Roman theaters.
1955  
1956 Illustrations for Fleur de Colchique with Michel Déon.
